Angolan Minister Emphasizes Role of Universities in National Development

Huambo:Minister of State and Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic, Dionsio da Fonseca, highlighted the crucial role of Angola's academic sector in fostering sustainable development and generating solutions for the nation. This was emphasized during the opening of the 2026/2027 academic year under the theme 'Consolidating quality, transforming knowledge and serving Angola'.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister stated that universities should transcend merely awarding degrees and focus on expanding knowledge to stimulate development. He emphasized that higher education institutions must become engines of economic and social transformation, essential for achieving economic sovereignty through scientific and technological capacity.

Fonseca stressed the importance of scientific research as a core component of the national development strategy, rather than a supplementary activity. He noted the significant expansion of higher education over recent decades, providing greater access for young people across different provinces. This expansion should also translate into improved quality, equity, and capacity to meet the country's needs.

The government is investing in the expansion and modernization of higher education infrastructure, promoting digitalization, and enhancing the professional development of teaching staff. In Huambo, the construction of the Centre of Excellence for Food Security, Agriculture, and Soil Management is underway, expected to serve as a hub for research, innovation, and technological development.

Dionsio da Fonseca also addressed the digital transformation, recognizing it as both an opportunity and a challenge for education. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, data science, and robotics are reshaping professions and societal organization. Huambo, with its university tradition and strategic position, is well-placed to contribute to this digital strategy, fostering connections across various societal sectors.
