BAKU: The Climate Change Summit (COP29) has commenced its high-level debate, with Angola being represented by its Vice President, Esperança da Costa. The summit's central focus is the financing of climate projects aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and implementing other environmental measures. According to Angola Press News Agency, the UN Secretary for Climate, Simon Stiell, highlighted the urgency for global cooperation on climate change during the opening session. He emphasized the necessity of establishing a new global climate finance target, cautioning that if at least two-thirds of the world's nations do not swiftly reduce emissions, the consequences will be dire for every country. Stiell also stressed that climate finance should not be perceived as charity, but as a critical investment in global stability. COP29 President, Moukhtar Babaïev, reiterated the importance of this summit as a pivotal moment for the Paris Agreement. He called for robust action from all participating nations in Baku , urging them to demonstrate their commitment to the climate goals set in previous agreements. Babaïev pointed out the tangible impacts of climate change, citing recent floods in Spain and fires in Australia as evidence of the urgent need for leadership and action beyond mere expressions of sympathy or policy proposals.
