AU Commission Chairperson considers coups d’état setback for democracies Malabo – The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mousa Faki Mahamat, said Wednesday in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, that unconstitutional changes of governments mark a retreat from democratic processes in African countries. The Chadian diplomat was speaking at the opening session of the extraordinary executive council of the African Union being held in Malabo, where Angola was represented by a delegation headed by Interior Minister, Eugenio Laborinho. The meeting of ministers precedes the summits of Heads of State and Government that on 27 and 28 will analyze the humanitarian situation in Africa, terrorism and unconstitutional changes of governments on the African continent. According to the AU Chairperson, the unconstitutional changes of governments are a recent and very sad scourge for the continent that has implications on the development of African countries. He said terrorism and coups d’état are a “gangrene” which is progressively affecting all the regions of the continent. “The terrorists continue their macabre actions with considerable consequences in the areas of finance, economy and security of the population”, he lamented. Humanitarian situation As regards the humanitarian situation, Mousa Faki said that Africa has 113 million people in humanitarian need, of which 48 million are refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people. “We have to urgently respond to the needs of these people so that we can preserve the human dignity of our citizens,” said the diplomat. In this sense, he defended the need for governments and their partners to do everything possible to reduce the increase of displaced people in Africa. “If we do nothing we will see this number increase to irreversible figures and deteriorate their human conditions,” he stressed. The Angolan delegation includes the Minister of Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women, Faustina Alves, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Bravo Conde da Silva Mendonça, and the Angolan Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Francisco José da Cruz.
