New health units facilitate specialised care

Luanda – The construction and/or rehabilitation of specialised health units in the country has improved the service rendered to the patients who previously pursued assistance abroad.

The country, which benefitted from the construction, rehabilitation and expansion of a total of 79 health units, as of 2017, has recorded an increase in access to health services.

Of this range, the public dialysis services stand out, thus contributing to the reduction of costs and social problems and families break ups.

The service has come to respond to the cases of patients of the National Health Board assistance, with the reduction of medical evacuations, especially of patients with chronic kidney diseases.

The opening of the health centers made it possible to increase the capacity to provide a further 3,772 patients per week with medical assistance.

Patients can pursue the dialysis services in specialised hospital units in some country’s provinces.

They include Huíla province-based Central Hospital, David Bernardino Pediatric Hospital (Luanda), General Hospital of Moxico, Luanda General Hospital.

There are also in the provinces of Cabinda, Benguela, as well as at the Sol Hemodialysis Center, all equipped with cutting edge technology.

Over 500 Angolan doctors trained in family medicine

Luanda – At least 35 Angolan doctors are being trained in general and family medicine at the level of the municipalities, the secretary of State for hospital affairs, Leonardo Inocêncio, said Thursday in Luanda.

Leonardo Inocêncio, who was speaking at the opening of the first International Forum on General and Family Medicine to mark the World Family Doctor Day, said the training was part of the programme for upgrading specialists in priority areas for the country.

The Health official added that at least 2,620 physicians are still being trained in Paediatrics, Genaecology, Obstetrics, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Internal and Intensive Medicine, Public Health, Anaesthesia and Resuscitation, to ensure a differentiated assistance for the population.

The training programme is being run by the National Council for Postgraduate Specialization in Health Sciences involving other sectors and professionals with main focus on the Human Resources Needs Plan.

Inocencio added that the country currently has 215 specialists in general and family medicine, being 28 Angolans and 187 expatriates.

For the family doctor, Cuban Yiliam Jimenez, Angola is taking an important step in the training of family doctors, since there is already greater awareness about the importance of the professional who has the mission of taking preventive medicine to the communities.

The doctor highlighted Angola’s commitment to training family doctors, a bet the Ministry of Health implemented in 2021 based on the emergency training programme with help of Cuban professors.

Janeth Adão, an Angolan specialist in general family medicine, expressed satisfaction for being one of the nationals in this specialty, that is just now gaining ground in the country, stressing that the Executive’s focus on the specialization of physicians and the presence of these professionals in the communities is visible.

“The increase of health specialists contributes to the improvement of the population’s health care, since most of the professionals are in primary health care,” she said.

The participant from Mozambique, Yolanda Marcelino Sabino, on her turn, considered it pertinent to hold such international forum for the exchange of experiences and knowledge of policies implemented by countries in the area under analysis.

The first International Forum of General and Family Medicine took place under the theme “The challenges of the family doctor in primary health care” and had the participation of Brazilian, Cuban, Mozambican and Portuguese physicians.

JinkoSolar and Must Zimbabwe Signed 100MWh ESS Distribution Agreement in Zimbabwe, Africa

SHANGHAI, May 18, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — JinkoSolar, one of the largest and most innovative PV module manufacturers in the world, today announced that it has signed a distribution agreement with Must Zimbabwe, one of the biggest distributors of photovoltaic modules, inverters, batteries and energy storage system in Zimbabwe distribution market. According to the agreement, JinkoSolar will supply over 100MWh of its ESS products to Must Zimbabwe, including lithium iron phosphate battery system units for residential use and LFP container storage system for C&I power demand.

JinkoSolar’s energy storage system features higher energy density while maintaining long life span and strong safety. It uses a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) as its anode materials with the additional advantage of no memory effect so the battery can be charged and discharged shallowly and frequently, which can effectively improve the efficiency of the system. On top of that, it also possesses protection functions like over-charge, over-discharge, over-current and abnormal temperature, which guarantees reliability & safety over the lifespan.

Flexible design configuration is another key feature of JInkoSolar’s ESS to meet the requirements in different application scenarios in Africa. In areas with high operating temperatures and limited installation space, users can connect the battery units parallel to form a larger capacity battery pack to meet their requirements of long power backup time and long service life. In relatively developed areas of Africa, the system supports on- and off-grid switching function, which allows it to be integrated into the grid to maximize IRR and lower LCOE.

“The agreement signed between JinkoSolar and Must Zimbabwe indicates a significant relationship between two companies. As there is a booming ESS market in Zimbabwe, we’re certain that, together with JinkoSolar, we’ll be able to deliver desirable yet affordable ESS products & solutions in local market and develop a stronger local distribution network that meet our local demands,” said Mike Guo, Head of Must Zimbabwe.

“Clear as day, electricity demand is expected to double to over 2300 TWh in Africa by the end of 2040, with most of the additional demand stemming from productive uses and emerging middle- and higher-income households. And renewables will be the powerhouse that drives Africa’s brighter future. Our company is so proud to be part of African energy transformation and our PV+ ESS solutions can be applied in utility-scale projects connected to the grid, C&I power demand, or residential off-grid power demand,” said Jaffer Wang, GM of SSA, JinkoSolar.

As one of the world’s Tier1 solar manufacturers, JinkoSolar has strong commitment to offering a wide range of PV+ solutions, in which its Energy Storage System will achieve better electricity management for customers in Africa and elsewhere.

Muyatwa Sitali, SWA Head of Country Engagement and Lucinda O’Hanlon, SWA Head of Policy and Strategy welcome 350 participants to the 2022 Sector Ministers' Meeting on water and sanitation in Jakarta, Indonesia

Landmark Meeting Urges Prioritization of Water and Sanitation to get Health, Climate and Economic Targets Back on Track

JAKARTA, Indonesia, May 18, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — More than 350 participants from 57 countries gathered today in Jakarta for the opening of the Sector Ministers’ Meeting which will generate urgent prioritization of water and sanitation worldwide.

Muyatwa Sitali, SWA Head of Country Engagement and Lucinda O’Hanlon, SWA Head of Policy and Strategy welcome 350 participants to the 2022 Sector Ministers' Meeting on water and sanitation in Jakarta, Indonesia

Among them were 50 ministers of water, sanitation, health, environment and the economy, who met to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and a struggling global economy, which have threatened decades of progress on sustainable development. The event was hosted by the Government of Indonesia and convened by the United Nations-hosted Sanitation and Water for All global partnership (SWA) and UNICEF.

Opening the event, Patrick Moriarty, Chair of SWA’s Steering Committee told participants that this triple crisis is deeply intertwined with water and sanitation, making government prioritization of these issues vital.

“Water and sanitation are indispensable for preventing public health emergencies, integral to supporting economic development and imperative for making communities resilient to climate change,” he said.

According to event organizers, access to water and soap will generate $45 billion per year, and reduce the spread of infections in a COVID-19-like epidemic by up to 20 per cent.

Approximately 74 per cent of all natural disasters between 2001 and 2018 were water-related, requiring urgent action. Forty per cent of the global population is highly vulnerable to the impact of climate change.

Additionally, universal access to toilets with safely managed waste will generate $86 billion per year in greater productivity and reduced health costs.

“Water and sanitation are the foundation of all sustainable development – and key to helping children survive and thrive,” said Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF.  ”When 300,000 children still die every year from diseases linked to unsafe water and inadequate sanitation, we know we need to do more.”

The Sector Ministers’ Meeting will equip political leaders with the evidence and best practices they need to prioritize investments in water and sanitation, which in turn will support the Sustainable Development Goals. It also aims to transform inter-ministerial collaboration at the national level around the human rights to water and sanitation, as well as international learning and cooperation.

It was preceded by a six-month-long preparatory process at both global and national levels, involving 126 governments and organizations.

Port of Lobito wants women trained in maritime sector

Lobito – The chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Lobito, Celso Rosas, on Wednesday here, defended the focus on training women for their empowerment in the maritime sector.

Celso Rosas, who was speaking to the press on the sidelines of a lecture on the International Maritime Women’s Day, which is marked today (18), said that this activity is quite complex and difficult, requiring much sacrifice and determination from those who practice it.

“This is why we have been promoting a lot of dialogue and training so that women understand correctly what the demands of their specialty are,” he explained.

Nélida Caterça, inspector of the Port of Lobito Authority, spoke of her experience in that activity, referring mainly about the visits to the ships, which involve all the maritime authorities to know if everything, is in conformity with the customs procedures.

She said that although there are currently only two percent of women working in the maritime industry, there is already more openness for them.

“Today we can already see women in charge of ships or in other management positions, a situation which, sometimes ago, was unthinkable because these activities were exclusively for men,” she said.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO, the acronym in English) decided to establish the International Day of Women in the Maritime Sector, on 18 May each year, to celebrate women in the maritime industry, promote their recruitment and sustainable employment.

Africa urged to prepare to process 125 billion barrels of oil

Luanda – Member Countries of the African Petroleum Producers Organization and partners reflected on Tuesday on the conditions the continent has to produce and process 125 billion barrels of oil from confirmed reserves, without the support of western technology and finance.

Speaking at the Roundtable on “African Local Content: Policy Review and Progress in Implementing Local Content in Africa,” participants reflected on how prepared Africa is to produce, process and trade more than 125 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and more than 500 trillion cubic feet of gas, without Western technology and finance.

The session provided an opportunity to highlight developments and progress in local content, developed in African oil and gas producing countries, especially in light of the global energy transition away from fossil fuels.

Simbi Wabote, Executive Secretary of Nigeria’s Content Development and Monitoring Board, advanced that soon, industry partners may withdraw technologies, refuse to buy African products, thus forcing countries to improve the capacity to keep moving forward.

The Nigerian senior executive, who was moderator of the panel, lamented the fact that 600 million Africans are without access to electricity, which he called a “continent in the dark”.

Based on statistics already published, he also complained about the existence of 800 million Africans without access to cooking gas, especially now that we are talking about energy transition.

Regarding energy transition, he said it is an issue already discussed within Nigerians, but in his view, energy transition is not a new phenomenon, recalling the replacement of the use of wood for coal, and so on.

He explained that because of the situation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, some European countries are questioning whether Africa can give more oil and gas, further stressing that mineral resources are imperative for the African continent.

Babafemi Oyewole, CEO of Energy Synergy Partners, said Local Content is a challenge for African countries calling for the need to the develop regional market for oil and gas services.

He added that African countries should take full advantage in the new initiatives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA).

Another issue around Local Content, is the access to financing for companies, which Oyewole said he considers fundamental, for the continent needs to get used to the new normal, that is, the new themes on renewable energy, otherwise financing will be difficult.

Therefore, he says he welcomes the setting up of a fund for the creation of an energy bank, an initiative that counts on the commitment of the Afreximbank.

Francisco Monteiro, president and CEO of BRIMONT, an Angolan company, said he believes that the expectations that are created for the post-oil era are safeguarded and a better future is foreseen.

He added that there are good laws, but there is still some deficit in monitoring them.

Another aspect raised by Francisco Monteiro, is related to bank loans, about which he said, banks do not have adequate instruments suiting the reality of the country.

Economic agents expecting reopening of Luvo’s border

Mbanza Kongo – Economic agents in the municipality of Mbanza Kongo, province of Zaire, are looking forward to the reopening of the Luvo border market, which was closed almost two years ago due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking to ANGOP this Wednesday, the citizens said they hope that with the end of the State of Public Calamity in the country, the authorities will be able to reopen the northern border between the province of Zaire and the DRC, for the resumption of that area’s commercial activity.

António José, economic agent, said he believes that, similar to what happened with the reopening of the land borders of Santa Clara (Cunene) and Massabi (Cabinda), the Luvo border, in the municipality of Mbanza Kongo (Zaire) might/should be the next one.

“Luvo is one of the busiest border posts in the country. Its ineffectiveness is creating several constraints for the inhabitants of the region and beyond”, he recalled.

Maria Lukeba, who for years was dedicated to the sale of soft drinks in this border area with the DRC, said that the Luvo market, in addition to generating revenue for the state, was a source of livelihood for many Angolan families.

The municipal administrator of Mbanza Kongo, Manuel Nsiansoki Gomes, recently told the press that cleaning work has been taking place in the aforementioned commercial space for days.

He assured that the works in progress will culminate with the upgrading of this border perimeter, which is awaiting a higher authorization for the reopening of the fair and the resumption of trade with the neighboring country.
