Huambo – The British non-governmental organization The Halo Trust, opened an awareness a campaign on the risks of unexploded devices in central Huambo province, Angop has learnt.
This is a joint action developed in partnership with the National Agency for Action against Mines (ANAM), with funding from the US Government.
The initiative is meant to contribute to the efforts made by the authorities in the province of Huambo, aimed to prevent and combat deaths and injuries resulting from explosion of these war materials.
Data recently released by the local authorities pointed to the registration, in 2022, of four accidents with explosive devices, which caused the death of seven people and injured 18.
According to officer in charge of The Halo Trust’s project, Felícia Chipalavela, although Huambo province is being declared free of mines, it still presents a huge risk from the point of view of the existence of unexploded devices, left during the armed conflict.
She said this calls for the need of awareness campaigns on the risks and dangers of these means.
She said that the campaigns will be held in educational institutions, informal and formal markets, as well as in other places with high population density.
Huambo province, one of the most affected provinces by armed conflict in Angola, is home to more than 2.7 million citizens, spread in 11 municipalities and 37 communes. VKY/ALH
