Botswana President Commences Strategic Visit to Angola

Luanda: Botswana's President, Duma Gideon Boko, began a three-day official visit to Angola on Monday, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, with a focus on economic, trade, investment and political consultation matters. During his stay in Luanda, the Tswana Head of State is expected to hold high-level meetings with Angolan authorities to deepen the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. According to Angola Press News Agency, the visit comes a few days after the first session of the Angola-Botswana Joint Bilateral Commission was held in Luanda, nearly five decades after the establishment of this cooperation mechanism. The meeting provided an opportunity to assess the state of bilateral relations and prepare new legal instruments to enhance and diversify cooperation between the two countries. Among the sectors identified as having potential for stronger cooperation are agriculture, livestock, energy, mining, tourism, transport, logistics, the environment and food security. The diamond industry is also an area of mutual interest, given Botswana's extensive experience in the sector and Angola's position among Africa's leading diamond producers. Cooperation in tourism may include nature conservation, national park management and the promotion of sustainable tourism, areas in which both countries have complementary experience and potential. As part of the visit, an Angola-Botswana Economic Forum is also scheduled to take place, bringing together business leaders and institutions from both countries and facilitating the identification of trade, investment and partnership opportunities. In this context, the visit is expected to strengthen trade and investment prospects by fostering closer links between companies and institutions from the two countries. Relations between Angola and Botswana are underpinned by several legal instruments, including the General Agreement on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation, signed in 2006. The holding of the first session of the Joi nt Bilateral Commission, 50 years after its establishment, represents renewed momentum for institutional cooperation mechanisms between Luanda and Gaborone. Angola and Botswana are members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), through which they contribute to efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, regional integration and economic development. Consultation on regional and continental issues also remains an area of common interest, particularly within the frameworks of SADC and the African Union. Duma Boko's visit forms part of efforts to revitalise bilateral relations and explore new areas of partnership, based on economic complementarity and the strengthening of regional integration.
