Luanda: The President of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) and National Council of Justice, Luiz Edson Fachin, reaffirmed on Monday, in Luanda, the importance of the independence of constitutional courts as a decisive factor in protecting fundamental rights. Speaking during the Solemn Plenary Session of Angola's Constitutional Court, the Brazilian magistrate emphasized that these courts must serve as a system of checks and balances in a world where there is no shortage of examples of democratic backsliding.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Luiz Edson Fachin highlighted the need to further strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two countries, focusing on bolstering the courts' institutional capacity. He added that efforts would continue to consolidate the ties uniting the judicial systems of Angola and Brazil-ties "whose strength rests on a human and historical foundation that is rarely replicated with such intensity in other areas of international relations."
The judge also paid tribute to Angola's constitutional democracy for the progress achieved over the years. "For a Brazilian constitutional judge-who, along with an entire generation, followed from across the ocean the struggles and achievements that culminated in the independence of our sister nation, Angola, and who subsequently kept both eyes and heart fixed on the internal challenges faced by the Angolan people-this is deeply gratifying," he emphasized.
Topics being addressed during the meeting include the digital modernization of the justice system, electronic case processing, the creation of the Angolan Center for Constitutional Studies, constitutional democracy, judicial independence, and the challenges surrounding electoral processes. Also on Monday, Lus Edson Fachin will visit the Supreme Court, where he will be received by the institution's president-who also heads the Superior Council of the Judicial Magistracy-Norberto Sodr© Joo.
On Tuesday, the Brazilian magistrate will hold meetings at the Presidential Palace and the National Assembly with high-ranking Angolan state officials. That same day, he will deliver a keynote lecture titled "Constitutional Democracy and Judicial Independence" at the Rui Ferreira Auditorium in the Palace of Justice.
Judicial cooperation between Angola and Brazil is maintained through active initiatives in the justice sector, based on the sharing of experiences, the training of magistrates, technical exchanges, and the strengthening of judicial institutions. Within the framework of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, both nations have promoted initiatives to modernize the justice system, uphold the democratic rule of law, and consolidate constitutional justice.
Lus Edson Fachin's visit is part of this effort to foster institutional ties and strengthen legal cooperation between Luanda and Braslia.
