Luanda: A delegation from the Federal University of So Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil, has arrived in Luanda to provide update training for Angolan professionals and support the development of care protocols for the soon-to-be-inaugurated President Julius Kambarage Nyerere Burn Hospital. This new facility aims to become a reference center for treating burns, complex wounds, microsurgical reconstruction, and scientific research, thereby enhancing Angola's capabilities in specialized medical care.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the Ministry of Health released a statement on Tuesday indicating that the technical mission includes experts from both UNIFESP and the So Paulo Hospital. These institutions are renowned for their expertise in treating burns, conducting plastic surgery, and managing intensive care and infection control. The Brazilian delegation conducted a technical visit to the hospital facilities, assessing operating theaters, equipment, inpatient areas, support services, and designated training spaces for healthcare professionals.
The mission's comprehensive work program will feature technical assessments, collaborative meetings with care teams, scientific sessions, practical training, and discussions on clinical protocols. These activities will cover areas such as plastic surgery, intensive care, physiotherapy, clinical nutrition, hospital pharmacy, and infection prevention and control. A key focus of the collaboration is strengthening infection prevention in burn patients, who are particularly vulnerable due to compromised protective barriers.
The initiative will also support microbiological surveillance strategies, early diagnosis, and the rational use of antimicrobials, aiming to reduce complications and improve patient outcomes. Additionally, the UNIFESP team will oversee the launch of the National Hospital Infection Control Programme, set to be implemented in 30 reference hospitals throughout Angola's 21 provinces. This program will enhance Hospital Infection Control Committees, modernize epidemiological surveillance, strengthen clinical microbiology, and train specialized professionals nationwide.
The Brazilian mission will remain in Angola until August 3, participating in scientific seminars, training activities, and technical visits, further solidifying the cooperative relationship between Brazil and Angola.
