British Consulate in Angola Supports Ecological Projects in Huambo

Huambo: The British Consul General in Angola, Jonathan Das, has announced plans to promote ecological programs in the central Huambo province to preserve the environment. These initiatives are part of a collaborative effort between the British consulate, Angolan institutions, and non-governmental organizations working with local communities.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Jonathan Das revealed that these projects have been underway since 2024 in partnership with various organizations. One key partner is the Angolan non-governmental organization Action for Rural Development and Environment (ADRA), which unites rural families, cooperatives, and associations dedicated to sustainable production.

Jonathan Das explained that the ecological project has received funding amounting to 11,300 euros, which is allocated for raising environmental awareness among rural families. The visit to Huambo province is intended to evaluate ADRA's initiatives in both the environmental and agricultural sectors, ensuring they adhere to ecological principles.

The diplomat highlighted that these ecological projects are not limited to Huambo but also extend to the provinces of Cubango, Cunene, Huila, and Malange. The overarching goal is to enhance environmental literacy and actively involve the population in the protection of ecosystems.

Cid¡lia Gomes, ADRA's director in Huambo province, commented on the significance of this environmental preservation project as it marks the beginning of ADRA's partnership with the British Embassy. This collaboration aims to mitigate the effects of climate change. The initiative is currently in an experimental phase in the municipality of Chilata and includes components such as environmental education and tree planting, all conducted in line with ecological principles.

Since its inception in 1990, ADRA has managed 31 associations and 24 cooperatives, involving roughly 3,000 peasant families throughout Huambo province.
