Sumbe:Three individuals lost their lives, and 30 others were injured when a passenger bus overturned on National Road 100 at Morro do Chingo, in the municipality of Sumbe, Cuanza-Sul Province. The accident occurred on Monday as the bus was traveling the Luanda/Benguela route.
According to Angola Press News Agency, preliminary reports indicate that 12 passengers escaped the accident without injuries. The injured were swiftly transported to 17 de Setembro Hospital in Sumbe, where they are currently receiving medical attention and medication.
The National Police Provincial Command in Cuanza-Sul's spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Mário Lino de Sousa, suggested that a technical fault in the bus's steering mechanism might have caused the driver to lose control while navigating a right-hand curve, leading to the vehicle overturning. The ongoing 'Safe Long Weekend 2' operation, initiated on 30 October, aims to enhance road safety and reduce accidents during periods of increased travel.
Chief Superintendent Sousa advised motorists to practice defensive driving and adhere to traffic laws to prevent further incidents. Meanwhile, Farias Lucas, the clinical director of 17 de Setembro Provincial Hospital, confirmed that among the 30 injured, 27 have been discharged after improvement, while three remain under observation. The hospital received 14 women, 16 men, and five children under ten. Despite the severity of some injuries, including a moderate traumatic brain injury and minor bruising in a child, the patients are reportedly out of danger.
Emergency services, including the National Police, Civil Protection and Fire Service, and the National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEMA), were instrumental in transporting the injured to the hospital.
