Namibe:The Namibe Corridor is emerging as a significant driver of regional integration in Southern Africa, with key investments in the port infrastructure of Momedes and the rehabilitation of National Road 140 (EN140). Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia have expressed interest in this strategic project, which aims to enhance commercial exchanges and bolster economic development in the region.
According to Angola Press News Agency, over the past five years, the Port of Namibe has undergone extensive modernization with an investment of $600 million. This includes the rehabilitation of the quay at the Saco-Mar Mineral Terminal, which resumed operations in April 2026. The quay is now capable of accommodating large vessels and handling approximately 10 million tonnes of ore annually. The expansion of the Container Terminal further enhances the port's capacity, positioning southern Angola as a strategic platform for international mineral trade.
The Momedes Railway (CFM) plays a crucial role in supporting the Namibe Corridor by increasing heavy cargo transport capacity. Plans are underway to expand freight volumes significantly in the coming years. The railway links the provinces of Namibe, Huíla, and Cubango, and is a key component of the logistics network facilitating trade and passenger mobility across Southern Angola.
The rehabilitation of National Road 140 is set to integrate the Southern African Development Community (SADC) through the Namibe Port Corridor. Governor José Martins highlighted the road's potential to transform Cubango into a logistics and commercial hub, enabling better connectivity with Namibia and the broader region.
Business leaders and local officials have also called for improvements in the corridor's operational aspects to maximize its potential. The integration of the transport network aims to boost regional trade, support the agricultural sector, and enhance the profitability of local businesses.
The Namibe Port Corridor, with its strategic location and modernized infrastructure, is poised to become a key logistics gateway for Southern Africa, facilitating trade and economic growth for landlocked neighboring countries.
