Luanda:The Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA) has called for forgiveness, love, and reconciliation among Angolans, emphasizing these as crucial for consolidating peace and building a future devoid of division and conflict.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the message, delivered by Bishop Gaspar Domingos during the inauguration of the 'Aliança Eterna' (Eternal Covenant) Memorial, stressed the need for Angola to heal its past wounds through forgiveness, justice, sincere repentance, and respect for human dignity. The message drew on a biblical passage, 2 Chronicles 714, which advocates humility, prayer, and turning away from evil, and highlighted reconciliation's three dimensions with God, neighbors, and the land itself.
Bishop Domingos noted Angola's history of conflict and suffering, emphasizing that the memorial's inauguration was not just a ceremony but an act of historical justice to preserve victims' memory and teach future generations.
He recalled the efforts of churches during the war, particularly through the Inter-Church Committee for Peace in Angola (COEPA), and mentioned Pope John Paul II's 1992 visit, during which he prayed for peace at the memorial's site.
Bishop Domingos further stressed that forgiveness requires truth and justice, not the erasure of history or denial of injustices. He urged Angolans to promote peace, justice, and unity, embracing diversity as a source of national strength.
The 'Aliança Eterna' Memorial, located in Ingombota, Luanda, aims to honor the memory of conflict victims and foster collective awareness. It stands 35 meters tall, features two interconnected blocks symbolizing an embrace, and includes various facilities to support its mission of reconciliation and forgiveness.
