Civil Society representatives stage sit-in to denounce European migration-related policies

Tunis: Several Civil Society representatives on Thursday staged a sit-in in front of the headquarters of the Delegation of the European Union to Tunisia to denounce “the European migration policy.”

Spokesperson for the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) Romdhane Ben Amor said that the sit-in is a protest against the policies of European countries who are using what he described as “a policy of extortion” against southern Mediterranean countries.

This protest movement seeks to encourage European countries to stop the “inhumane policies and the security approach adopted to address migration issues,” he specified, adding that “the EU must undertake to open secure migration corridors guaranteeing the movement of migrants to solve this issue.”

“Tunisia will be the only land access route for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa seeking to reach Europe,” he pointed out, referring to reports that “European countries north of the Mediterranean are considering signing migration agreements with some ne
ighbouring countries south of the Mediterranean.”

Activist and migration expert Khaled Tababi said for his part, the sit-in aims to put an end to cooperation agreements on migration between Tunisia and European countries, indicating that the protesters call for the need to guarantee safe migration.
