Malanje: The Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in Malanje incinerated two tons of narcotics on Thursday as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking. The destruction of the drugs was aligned with the provincial celebrations of the International Day Against Drug Abuse, observed on June 26.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the drugs were seized by the SIC between June 2024 and the present date. During the ceremony, Joo Cassua, the delegate of the Ministry of the Interior in Malanje, emphasized the necessity of a continued fight against crimes related to the possession, use, trafficking, and cultivation of narcotics in the province, with the involvement of law enforcement agencies. He highlighted the loss of lives due to excessive marijuana use across the country.
The local SIC spokesperson, Alexandre Cambolo, reported that from June last year to the present date, 117 crimes related to narcotics trafficking, possession, consumption, and cultivation have been documented, leading to the arrest of 137 national citizens, aged between 17 and 65, including 37 women. He noted that Cambundi-Catembo municipality has the highest production rate, with one ton of the incinerated narcotics originating from there.
World Drug Day was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the effects of drug use and its societal consequences. The observance was instituted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution No. 42/112 on December 7, 1987.
