Havana – Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said on Wednesday that, under no circumstances, will he participate in the Summit of the Americas, in Los Angeles, the agency France Press (AFP) announced today.
The announcement comes as several leaders have warned that they will boycott the meeting if Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela are excluded from it.
“I can guarantee that, in no case, I will participate”, said Diaz-Canel on his Twitter account, in which he thanked “the courageous and dignified position of the countries that raised their voices against the exclusions”.
In his message today, Díaz-Canel said that, despite having withdrawn from participating, “as always happened, Cuba’s voice will be heard” at the meeting.
Cuba participated for the first time in the Summit of the Americas in 2015, in Panama, and in 2018 attended the event, in Lima.
The country denounced last month that it was being left out of preparations, and that it would be “a serious historical setback” not to be invited.
However, the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, is going to the US for the Summit of the Americas and will have a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden, after meeting with the advisor to the US leader.
Biden asks Bolsonaro to participate in the Summit of the Americas, according to him, Brazil has a lot to contribute.
