Luanda – A delegation from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) has been in Luanda since Tuesday to assess the steps taken around the country’s commitments and provide technical support for the national Secretariat.
One of the commitments that Angola made at the time it joined the organisation, on June 16, 2022, was to continue to improve the processes of supervision of the transparent management of mineral resources for the benefit of the people.
The delegation, which is headed by EITI’s Director of Dissemination and Engagement, Lyydia Kilipi, will stay in Angola until Feb 18th, according to a note released by the National Coordination Committee (CNC) of this initiative.
The document states that information will be shared with the international secretariat on the EITI implementation in Angola.
The visiting agenda also features a workshop on “Natural Resources and Illicit Financial Flows”, a meeting for 15 members of the EITI CNC, including those from the Ministries of Finance, Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, National Agency for Oil and Gas (ANPG), Sonangol, Azuly, Equinor and Sodiam.
Also taking part in the meeting are members of the EITI CNC, representatives of civil society, the Association of Disadvantaged Children in Angola (ACDA), Angolan ADRA, Youth Association for Community Development of Angola (AJUDECA), Ecological Youth of Angola (JEA) and Mwana Pwó.
The agenda also includes meeting with representatives of the Association of Petroleum Exploration Companies of Angola (ACEPA) and the mining sector, as well as the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, in his capacity as president of the CNC.
Joint meeting with the Embassy of Norway and development partners are also scheduled.
This is the first working visit by the EITI international secretariat, since the EITI Council approved Angola’s candidacy for membership in this initiative, becoming the 57th member country and the 28th in Africa.
The acceptance was made possible by the initiative of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.
