Talatona – The ruling MPLA party announced its effort to reduce the unemployment rate by 25 percent over the next five years, if it wins the general elections of August.
This was announced Wednesday by the party’s senior official in Luanda, Pedro Filipe, who is also Secretary of State for Labour and Social Security (MAPTSS).
Filipe was speaking during a lecture on “The Employment for Reducing the Unemployment Rate programme”, ahead of the 18th edition of the National Camp for University Students’ Vacations (CANFEU).
The politician reiterated the Executive’s challenge to reverse the percentage rate of unemployment that stands above 30%.
He recalled that in its latest report, the National Statistics Institute (INE) put at 30.8% the employment rate, clarifying that in the first quarter of 2022 the employed population increased by 3%, compared to fourth quarter of 2021.
And the employment rate increased by 1.2% points, compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.
According to INE, the number of unemployed in the aforementioned period was 4.9 million, which represents a reduction of 6.6% compared to the same period last year.
Pedro Felipe considered the number of unemployed people to be rampant, as of the more than 12 million citizens, who are employed, 80% are reflected in markets, agriculture and animal hunting.
He regretted the fact that more than five million people are unemployed, in an active population of more than 16 million inhabitants, a number that has worsened due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
