Elections2022: French president congratulates João Lourenço on re-election

Luanda – French head of State Emmanuel Macron Tuesday congratulated his Angolan counterpart João Lourenço on the victory of MPLA in the general elections on 24 August.

MPLA and its candidate for President of the Republic, João Lourenço, won Angola’s elections, with 51.17 percent of the valid votes, obtaining 124 seats in National Assembly.

As part of the final results released by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and validated by the Constitutional Court, the President Emmanuel Macron called the Angolan Head of State to congratulate him.

Over the last few days, various messages of congratulation from the world’s statesmen have reached the President João Lourenço Office.

This was the case of the presidents of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, Republic of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and Republic of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega.

The MPLA garnered a total of 3.2 million valid votes in 2022 general elections, the fifth in the country’s history, after those held in 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2017

France has maintained diplomatic relations with Angola since its independence. A first agreement signed in 1982 laid the foundations for bilateral cooperation.

Cooperation between the countries covers various fields, with stress to higher education, university and research, promotion of the French language and linguistic, cultural action, among others.
