Moçâmedes – Angola’s minister of Environment Ana Paula de Carvalho is in southwest Namibe province to assess the projects implemented by the non-governmental organisation African Park, aimed to preserve the assets of the Yona National Park.
Namibe will evaluate the ongoing projects contained in the memorandum between the government and African Park in order to ensure greater speed and quality of management of the environmental reserve, the minister told the press upon her arrival in Moçâmedes on Monday.
Since 2020, African Park has taken the full responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks, in partnership with governments and local communities.
In this project, the organisation is part of the management plan, rehabilitation and construction of the Yona Park, giving it more dynamic tourism and conservation of its fauna and flora and thus attract more tourists to this desert area of Namibe.
At this time, Yona park needs infrastructures that allow it to raise revenues for the province and the country in general, according to the minister for the sector.
Located in the Namibe Desert, in the southwest corner of Angola, Yona park has a coastline of 160 kilometres along the Atlantic Ocean.
It has also an iconic desert landscape, which stretches from the Atlantic coast over dunes, plains and mountains, covering a vast area of 15,200 square kilometres.
The minister will also visit the landfills in the municipalities of Moçâmedes and Tômbwa which, according to the minister, still need some support infrastructures for their full operation for treating solid waste.
