Dundo – The governor of Lunda Norte Province, Deolinda Vilarinho, Saturday called for more rigour in environmental impact studies on land reserves, to avoid situations that put at risk the social infrastructures to be built.
Speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the ceremony that served to officially present the building companies that will be involved in ravines containment works, she said that environmental studies foresee risks and possible environmental impacts to be prevented, corrected or reduced, before the implementation of a specific project in a land plot.
“We need to be rigorous in the environmental impact studies before deciding on sites for the construction of social infrastructures, to avoid damage that could cost lives, due to the emergence of ravines, for example”, she stressed.
The governor also advised municipal administrations staff to avoid distributing plots of land in areas where no environmental impact studies have been conducted.
Deolinda Vilarinho appealed to the population to avoid building residences in risk zones in order to safeguard their lives.
The Angolan state is expected to spend 11 billion kwanzas to tackle three ravines which have emerged in the municipality of Dundo, in the north-eastern Province of Lunda Norte.
In Angola, at least 742 ravines have been catalogued nationwide, of which 84 are in Lunda Norte, requiring urgent intervention.
