New York:United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated Angola on the 50th anniversary of its admission to the United Nations, which will be celebrated on December 1st. He praised Angola's significant contributions to strengthening multilateralism, promoting international peace and security, and sustainable development.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the recognition was made during a meeting between António Guterres and the Permanent Representative of Angola to the UN, Francisco José da Cruz. During this meeting, the commemorative program for Angola's fiftieth anniversary of joining the organization was presented.
The meeting is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts by Angola's permanent representative to mobilize institutional support and ensure participation from high-level United Nations officials in the upcoming High-Level Commemorative Session. This session is scheduled for December 1st and will be led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.
As part of the preparations, Francisco José da Cruz held meetings with key UN officials, including the President of the 81st session of the General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman, the President of ECOSOC, Amar Bendjama, and the President of the Peacebuilding Commission, Omar Hilale. These discussions aimed to present the objectives and activities of the commemorative program and extend invitations to these officials for the event.
The meetings revisited Angola's journey within the United Nations since its admission on December 1, 1976. They highlighted Angola's support for decolonization processes, international peace and security efforts, and cooperation strengthening between the UN and the African Union. Angola's experiences in national reconciliation, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction were also acknowledged, along with its contributions to preventive diplomacy and mediation, particularly in the Great Lakes Region.
Under the motto "Angola at the United Nations 50 Years of Multilateralism, Peace and Cooperation for the Future," the celebrations aim to showcase Angola's diplomatic achievements and reaffirm its commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. The commemorative session will occur from 1100 AM to 100 PM, followed by an official reception with international community representatives and Angola's partners.
Marking five decades of active UN participation, Angola reaffirms its dedication to contributing to a more representative, effective, and results-oriented organization, particularly in the areas of peace, security, and sustainable development.
