Baku:United Nations United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has extended congratulations to Angola as it approaches the 50th anniversary of its admission to the United Nations, scheduled to be commemorated on December 1. He commended Angola for its significant contributions to multilateralism, international peace and security, and sustainable development.
According to Angola Press News Agency, this recognition was expressed during a meeting between Guterres and Angola's Permanent Representative to the UN, Francisco José da Cruz. During the meeting, da Cruz presented the program of commemorative activities for the anniversary.
The meeting is part of a broader effort by Angola's diplomatic representatives to garner institutional support and ensure the participation of senior UN officials in a high-level session planned for December 1, which will be chaired by Angola's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.
In preparation for the commemorative session, Francisco José da Cruz met with several key UN figures, including Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Amar Bendjama, President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and Omar Hilale, Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission. These discussions focused on the objectives and activities of the commemorative program and extended invitations for these officials to participate.
The meetings also reviewed Angola's history with the UN since its admission on December 1, 1976, emphasizing its role in decolonization, peace promotion, and cooperation between the UN and the African Union (AU). Angola's efforts in national reconciliation, peacebuilding, and preventive diplomacy, particularly in the Great Lakes Region, were also acknowledged.
The upcoming celebrations, themed 'Angola at the United Nations 50 Years of Multilateralism, Peace and Cooperation for the Future,' aim to highlight Angola's diplomatic progress, strategic priorities, and commitment to the UN Charter. The commemorative session will be followed by an official reception, bringing together representatives from the international community and Angola's partners, reaffirming Angola's dedication to a representative and effective UN.
