Head of State Visits Progress of Muxima Facelift Works

Muxima: The Head of State, Joao Louren§o, is this Friday visiting the town of Muxima, in the Province of Icolo e Bengo, with the aim of assessing the progress of the urban redevelopment works and the construction of the future Catholic Basilica of Our Lady of Muxima Sanctuary, one of the largest projects to enhance the religious and cultural heritage of the country.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the visit is part of fieldwork intended to monitor the project, the first step of which involves relocating families residing in the area designated for the new Basilica. In pursuit of this objective, the construction of the satellite city of Coxi is underway, providing seven hundred homes for the relocated families.

This marks the second visit by President Joao Louren§o to the project this year. During a previous visit in June, he inspected several critical points of the site, including streets, reservoirs, the water treatment plant, and the future square intended to accommodate thousands of believers, alongside the exact location for the new Basilica. Additionally, he reviewed other planned social facilities, such as schools, a medical center, and complementary infrastructure.

At the conclusion of the visit, President Joao Louren§o announced his intention to return to Muxima in December 2025. He emphasized his commitment to closely monitoring the progress of the work and ensuring that the established deadlines are met. The renovation project in Muxima resumed in 2018, during the President's first term, following several years of interruption. Construction has been underway since 2022, when the first stone for the future Basilica was laid. The Casais-Omatapalo Consortium is responsible for executing a significant portion of the project.
