Kampti: The Kampti National Police arrested a group of illegal gold miners who had dug under the asphalt of a public road 3 km from the city, more precisely in Yolonhira, in the province of Poni. The intervention, which took place on the night of June 12 around 10 p.m., followed an alert raised by local residents.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the operation was led by Police Commissioner Ernest K. Sawadogo and proceeded without incident, resulting in the arrest of several individuals. In addition to the arrests, 24 motorcycles and gold mining equipment such as shovels and picks were seized.
The damage caused by these illegal activities threatened both the integrity of road infrastructure and the safety of road users. Law enforcement responded swiftly to this concerning situation.
Local authorities chose a more constructive approach over traditional sanctions. In line with the guidelines of Burkina Faso's President, Captain Ibrahim Traor©, regarding civic accountability, those arrested were redirected to community service (TIP).
This group, labeled the "first promotion," consists of 30 members now mobilized in Yolonhira as part of the national TIP program. The program aims to promote social reintegration and encourage every individual to contribute to national reconstruction efforts.
The prefect and president of the special delegation of Kampti, Massaba Aim© Soulama, together with the vice-president of the special delegation and the commander of the municipal police, praised the effectiveness of the police intervention. They also reiterated that any attack on public property or illegal exploitation will be punished.
Massaba Aim© Soulama highlighted the importance of prioritizing educational and restorative alternatives, fostering a spirit of cohesion and social justice.
For individuals like Hamado Sawadogo, Drissa Millogo, and Si© Kambir©, this community service is perceived not as a punishment but as a patriotic duty. Those arrested acknowledged the seriousness of their actions and are committed to raising awareness among other gold miners.
Local authorities are urging the population to remain vigilant and collaborate to protect public infrastructure and maintain social peace.
