Industrial Expansion Underway at Catumbela Development Zone

Catumbela:At least 15 new industrial units are under construction in the initial phase of the Catumbela Industrial Development Zone (PDIC) in Benguela Province. Miguel Etossi Correia, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, announced the progress on Monday.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Correia stated that the PDIC currently hosts 30 operational industries out of 105 established companies. The ongoing construction includes 15 additional units, with one set for inauguration on November 11, coinciding with the 51st anniversary of National Independence.

Miguel Etossi Correia emphasized the increasing interest from business groups in investing in the industrial zone, attributing the growth to the Lobito Corridor's influence. This corridor has enhanced the region's appeal for new industrial projects. Investors are actively seeking plots for factory construction, and Correia recently engaged with an investor interested in setting up operations in the zone.

A project to enhance the zone's infrastructure is in preparation. The initial phase will focus on development, with further interventions planned for the Biópio area in later stages. Correia underlined the importance of infrastructure improvements to meet the growing business interest and ensure suitable conditions for industrial operations.

Addressing land use challenges, Correia noted that unauthorized land occupation within the PDIC hinders growth and expansion. The 2,000-hectare zone is intended for industrial projects, but it has not yet been physically demarcated. Unauthorized occupation reduces available plots for industrial activities and complicates financing for project expansion.

Correia clarified that the land belongs to the Angolan Industrial Development Institute (IDIA) and that unauthorized use results in the loss of public assets, limiting opportunities for new factories. The second phase of the project in Biópio is on hold due to funding issues with Saudi Arabia, with a resolution being awaited to proceed. A consultancy firm is expected to be hired to manage necessary procedures.

Currently, the PDIC employs approximately 3,800 workers. Annual reviews of the zone's statistical indicators, including employment numbers, are conducted to track industrial development and its impact on job creation. Correia anticipates an increase in the workforce as new units become operational by the year's end.
