Luanda:The International Film Festival (FIC Luanda) has been hailed as a pivotal moment for the Angolan cinema industry, marking its return after a 12-year hiatus. During the festival's opening ceremony, the Minister of Culture, Filipe Zau, described it as a strategic opportunity for revitalizing dialogue within the industry, enhancing creativity, and expanding the production and distribution of national cinema.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the festival's revival is more than just the return of a cultural event. Filipe Zau emphasized the Executive's commitment to establishing FIC as a key player in structuring Angola's film industry, with goals of supporting local talent, generating employment, attracting investment, and sharing Angolan narratives globally.
In preparation for this resurgence, multi-purpose venues across Angola have been renovated over the last two years, aiming to sustain the sector. Additionally, efforts are underway to finalize the regulations for the Law on Cinema and Audiovisuals, recognizing the necessity of talent, creativity, legal frameworks, and consistent policies for industry growth.
FIC Luanda's director-general, Jorge Cohen, highlighted the festival's role as a cultural bridge, featuring over 100 films from more than 20 countries, including Nigeria and Brazil. The event aims to foster a cinema-going culture among young generations, with a special program for children, and to celebrate the diversity of Angolan filmmakers.
The festival is scheduled to run from October 28 to November 2, taking place in various cinemas throughout Luanda.
