Market offers attractive scenarios for economic diversification

Luanda – Angolan market offers several attractive scenarios for foreign investors to contribute to economic diversification, the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Angolan Communities said on Wednesday.

Domingos Vieira Lopes was speaking at the opening of the Cocoa and Honey Symposium and Fair, which takes place under the motto “Disseminating Angola’s unknown treasures”.

The official said that businesspeople can bet more on agricultural production, as it is an underexplored and very promising area.

Citing data provided by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the Secretary of State said that Angola produces around 23,000 tonnes of honey annually.

The study also showed that with more investment in new rules and modern techniques, production could triple up to 200,000 tons per year.

“It is an economic activity that is part of beekeeping, which has gradually developed in a sustainable way, without major constraints on the natural and social environment for our communities”, he underlined.

He said that the country has favourable conditions to develop the agricultural sector in the medium and long term and achieve the much coveted diversification of the economy.

The official also spoke of the need to make better use of one of the largest water reserves in sub-Saharan Africa and an extensive reserve of highly fertile agricultural land to ensure highest job rate for young people and the population in general.

The Cocoa and Honey Symposium and Fair, underway in Luanda on 5-6 October, brings together national cocoa and honey producers and beekeepers, who are presenting the products, as well as promoting the existing potential in the country.

The event was jointly sponsored by Ministries of Foreign Affairs (Mirex), and of Agriculture and Forestry (Minagrif), in partnership with the National Coffee Institute (INCA), the Forestry Development Institute (IDA) and the Angolan Private Investment and Export Promotion Agency (Aipex).
