Martyrs’ Day: parliament in forefront of forces defending Tunisia (statement)

The parliament will be in the forefront of forces defending the country and serving the people by means of discharging its mission in a climate of harmony and constructive work to ensure Tunisia’s security, stability and development, the House of People’s Representatives said Sunday as Tunisia is observing Martyrs’ Day.

It is likewise a source of pride that this observation is taking place as the parliament effectively started its proceedings. The House of People’s Representatives will remain faithful to martyrs while drawing lessons from their sacrifices, particularly in relation to demanding the establishment of a parliament to express the people’s will.

Martyrs’ Day is close to the hearts of Tunisians as it stands as a turning point in the struggle for Tunisia’s independence, further reads a statement

Twenty-two Tunisians fell as martyrs on April 8, 1938, and 150 others sustained injuries when they took to the streets to call for civil liberties and a Tunisian parliament.
