Mouhoun: The High Commissioner of Mouhoun Province, Souleymane Nakanabo, chaired the launch of the subscription campaign for the Burkina Faso Index-Based Climate Insurance Promotion Program (PPACI-BF) in Safan©. This event marks a significant step forward in protecting producers against the effects of climate change. Faced with increasingly frequent climatic hazards, farmers must adapt to a reality where periods of drought and flooding compromise the stability of agricultural yields and cause numerous losses for producers.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the PPACI-BF is proposing an innovative solution through index-based weather insurance (IBWI), a compensation mechanism based on meteorological parameters. Unlike traditional insurance, this model guarantees rapid and transparent compensation, without requiring individual expertise on farms. This pilot phase concerns three localities selected across two regions, namely the communes of Safan© and Tch©riba in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, and Dori in the Sahel region.
The program focuses on the most vulnerable populations, particularly women and young people, who form the backbone of many farms. By providing them with access to suitable insurance, the program promotes more secure agriculture and encourages investment in crops, stimulating local economic growth. The president of the special delegation of the commune of Safan©, Ali Traor©, expressed his commitment to this project, welcoming the involvement of partners and the choice of his commune to host the launch ceremony. He urged farmers to seize this opportunity and mobilize so that this initiative fully benefits local communities.
For the High Commissioner of Mouhoun Province, Souleymane Nakanabo, the success of the project depends on collective responsibility. He called on each actor to become an ambassador of index insurance, stressing that prevention and anticipation are essential to sustaining Burkinabe agriculture. The High Commissioner welcomed the strategic support of PPACI-BF, UNDP, and YEELEN Assurance, which have facilitated producers' access to effective coverage against climate risks. Improved seeds and agricultural inputs were provided to producers to help them with their production.
The representative of the beneficiaries, Boulaye Gn©m©, reaffirmed the mobilization of the producers and their support for this initiative. He called on producers to subscribe to this initiative to guarantee their agricultural production and work towards achieving food sovereignty according to the country's highest authorities. Indeed, 2,890 producers from the municipalities of Dori, Safan©, and Tch©riba have already subscribed to index-based agricultural insurance since 2022, demonstrating the growing interest in this system and its tangible impact on the ground.
