Muxima 2026: Politicians Highlight Muxima Redevelopment at Close of Pilgrimage

Muxima: Representatives of the MPLA and UNITA political parties on Sunday highlighted the redevelopment works at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Muxima, as the annual pilgrimage came to an end. According to Angola Press News Agency, MPLA Political Bureau Secretary for Organisation and Mobilisation Gonçalves Muandumba emphasized that the redevelopment of Muxima would transform the sanctuary into not only a religious destination but also a major tourist attraction. He noted the significant turnout at the central Mass of the event, which symbolized unity and peace in the country. Muandumba highlighted the ongoing works bringing development to the region, particularly through the construction of the Basilica with the support of the Angolan Government. Muandumba stated, 'It is a moment of peace. It is a place of peace and comfort. It strengthens the faith of Angolans, strengthens the hope of Angolans and, once again, allows us, in the MPLA, to reaffirm our commitment and dedication to c reating increasingly better living conditions for the Angolan people.' He attended the event on behalf of the party's Vice-President, Mara Quiosa. Meanwhile, UNITA President Adalberto Costa Júnior underscored the importance of maintaining a balance between human needs and material concerns. He remarked, 'Concrete structures are important, but when the challenges are so great, balance is required. We need to think more about people and a little less about material issues.' The pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Muxima took place from 3 to 6 September under the motto 'Mother Muxima, Kind Mother and Model of Holiness, Pray for Us' and the devotional theme 'With Mary, let us pray that no one may lack love'.
