Luanda: The new container terminal at the Port of Namibe, in the country's southwest, received its first cargo ship on Wednesday in the municipality of Mo§Smedes, a year after its inauguration in 2025. Speaking on the matter, the Commercial Director of the Port of Namibe, Domingos Delfim, stated that this milestone represents a significant asset for the institution, as it is the first of many operations expected to contribute to the economic growth of the province in particular.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Delfim explained that the vessel arrived from Lobito and will carry out 518 movements, exclusively transporting containerized cargo. Once all bureaucratic aspects are settled, the quay will be officially opened, dedicated solely to containerized cargo operations. The quay spans three hectares and can accommodate three thousand containers, including 280 refrigerated units that can be connected to other structures for freezing and preservation.
The port's terminal extends 1,116 meters, with depths ranging from three meters. Delfim added that two more ships are expected to arrive on the 15th and 20th of the current month, enhancing the terminal's operational capacity. The administrator emphasized that these developments will boost revenue collection and maintain the quay's operational status.
Delfim noted that the facility is well-equipped with eight cranes, three designated for unloading ships and five for stacking and parking cargo. He encouraged investors to consider the Port of Namibe as a well-equipped institution capable of conducting fast and efficient operations.
