National Assembly Considers Russia an Indispensable Partner in Angola’s Independence

Luanda: The first vice-Speaker of the National Assembly, Am©rico Cuanonoca, stated that Russia has long been an indispensable partner in Angola's fight against Portuguese colonialism, and for this reason, Angolans will remain eternally grateful for Russia's contribution.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Cuanonoca made these remarks during a press interaction on the sidelines of Russia Day celebrations, noting that Russia played a crucial role by arming defense forces, training military personnel, and forming cadres that led Angola to independence. The deputy emphasized the historic and strong bond between the two nations, highlighting Russia's instrumental role in the liberation of Africa, particularly the southern region. This contribution, alongside Cuban troops, was pivotal in defeating the South African invader, leading to Namibia's independence.

The deputy further acknowledged the support in training numerous cadres who currently manage the country. He emphasized that it is now the responsibility of the National Assembly to foster cooperation between the two parliaments and strengthen the friendly relations between the two peoples. General Pedro Sebastio, who received training in Russia, underscored the significance of the 50 years of independence Angola is celebrating. He highlighted the longstanding cooperation with the former Soviet Union, now Russia, as evidence of a robust bond of friendship, fraternity, and cooperation.

General Sebastio expressed that without the former Soviet Union, Angola's independence might have been more challenging or uncertain. He regarded the celebration as a tribute to the Russians who supported Angola's independence efforts, some of whom sacrificed their lives on Angolan battlefields.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Isaac do Anjos, praised the ongoing Angola-Russia cooperation in staff training, which has maintained the relationship at a high level. He noted the close ties in agriculture, resulting in the acquisition of fertilizers, motorized equipment, and technology.

June 12, celebrated as Russia Day, marks the birth of the nation with the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) in 1990.
