Zaire: The Civil Protection and Firefighters announced on Tuesday that an oil spill that occurred last week on the coast of Zaire province has damaged at least 13 artisanal boats and 113 fishing nets. The oil slicks, which are still of unknown origin, have also caused the death of several marine species on the beaches of Kimina, Kimpanga, and Mbu-a-Moyo in the municipalities of Tomboco and Quªlo.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the incident occurred on Wednesday night last week in the coastal areas of the communes of Kinzau (Tomboco municipality) and Mangue Grande (Quªlo municipality). In light of this situation, firefighters are carrying out awareness campaigns with the affected communities to prevent them from consuming dead fish or swimming in the affected areas.
The competent authorities are continuing to work to clarify the alleged fuel spill and hold the company involved accountable. Zaire province has a 250-kilometre coastline stretching through the municipalities of Soyo, Nzeto, Tomboco, and Quªlo.
