Over 100,000 teachers with updated categories

Cuito – At least 134,000 education workers all over the country had their categories updated from May 2021 to January 2023, the head of the National Teachers Union (Sinprof), Guilherme Silva, said Saturday.

The updating process of the teacher’s categories results from the understanding reached between the Ministry of Education (MED) and the Sinprof, in response to the complaints presented in 2019.

Guilherme Silva said that the main point of the specifications is to value the full length of service of all teachers, as well as the academic profile.

Silva pointed out that more than 2000 teachers are still waiting for their documents to be certified by the National Institute for Assessment, Accreditation and Recognition of Higher Education Studies (INAAREES).

He added that for this year, teachers who between 2021 and 2023 benefited only from the academic profile upgrade will also be updated with the time of service included.

Despite the resolution of some points of the demanded specifications, Sinprof did not rule out a strike in the coming days to put pressure on the government to respond to the remaining demands.

“At this moment, the strike is suspended, taking into account the understandings that was signed between both parties, but Sinprof will continue to fight to satisfy the other missing demand points”, Silva said.

The demands include reduction of the Labour Income Taxation (IRT), exemption of discounts on allowances, full payment of the bonus salary, improvements in the working conditions of the teachers and accommodation of students.
