Luanda – At least 2,648 people died and 12,922 were injured, as a result of 12,226 road accidents that occurred in 2021 in Angola.
The statistics were released at the 1st Ordinary Meeting of the National Council for Road and Traffic Management, held Friday in Luanda, under the vice president Bornito de Sousa.
Compared to 2020, the document states that there was an increase of 734 deaths, 2,580 injuries and 2,433 accidents on the country’s roads.
Luanda, with 2,884 accidents, Huíla (1,401), Benguela (1,026), Huambo (921) and Bié (593) top the list of the provinces with the highest number of accidents.
Speeding, lack of street lighting, poor technical condition of vehicles and roads, drunk driving, irregular overtaking and pedestrian crossings were contributing factors to traffic fatalities.
Reduction of road accidents
To reverse the situation, the National Council for Road and Traffic Management defends the continuous application of the National Strategy for Road Safety and Prevention 2019/2022, the promotion of a culture of road education and raising the levels of safety on the roads.
In its strategy, Angola proposes to reduce the rate of road fatalities from 26.9 to 18.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022.
