Over 85,000 Tuberculosis Cases Reported in Angola in 2025

Luanda: The Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that a total of 85,793 cases of tuberculosis, in all its forms, were registered throughout the national territory during 2025, making it the third leading cause of overall mortality in Angola. According to Angola Press News Agency, the announcement coincided with World Tuberculosis Day, marked on March 24. The ministry noted a significant improvement in the mortality rate, which declined from 3.4 to 1.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2025. Despite the improvement, tuberculosis remains a serious public health issue in Angola, predominantly affecting individuals aged 25 to 34, who account for 25% of the total cases. Health authorities report a 4% reduction in cases compared to 2024, when 90,058 cases were documented. The Ministry of Health attributes this reduction to increased access to diagnosis and treatment. However, the high number of cases continues to impact public health and the economy, affecting families, communities, and national development th rough school and work absenteeism and loss of productivity. The global context remains concerning, as tuberculosis continues to be one of the deadliest infectious diseases, according to data from the World Health Organization. In 2024, approximately 10.7 million people contracted the disease, with over a million succumbing to it. Under the motto "Yes! We can end Tuberculosis in Angola, led by the country and empowered by the people," Angolan authorities reiterated their commitment to intensifying prevention, diagnosis, and treatment measures. They also emphasized the importance of integrating services within primary health care. The Ministry of Health calls for the involvement of the entire society in combating the disease, stressing that only coordinated efforts will effectively eliminate tuberculosis as a public health issue in Angola.
