Luanda:More than 9,000 cases of violence against children were reported in Angola during the first half of 2026.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Mayomona disclosed at a symposium on preventing child sexual abuse that authorities registered 9,072 cases from January to June. These cases included 645 incidents of sexual violence, 2,415 of physical abuse, and 1,010 of psychological abuse.
Mayomona emphasized the significance of these statistics at the event themed "Caring for and protecting the child is building a healthy society." She highlighted that each case represents a child and a family that necessitates attention and action.
The midyear figures follow 26,024 reported cases of child violence in 2025, which comprised 1,028 instances of sexual violence, 1,376 of physical abuse, and 994 of psychological abuse. Mayomona stressed the need for a coordinated response involving government bodies, families, schools, civil society, and religious organizations to tackle the issue effectively.
She urged religious leaders to improve internal child protection measures, recognize early warning signs, and report incidents to authorities instead of concealing them to protect organizational reputations. The Angolan government continues to focus on expanding policies and support systems to uphold children's rights, with the understanding that a secure society starts with safeguarding its youngest members.
