Parliament advocates mitigation of harmful religious practices

Luanda – The Speaker of the National Assembly (AN), Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, on Thursday advocated the mitigation of vulnerabilities caused by harmful religious practices and extremism developed from terrorist actions.

The leader of the Angolan parliament was speaking at the opening session of the first cycle of conferences on national security, addressed to the members of the National Assembly (AN).

“In the national context, it is of utmost importance to mitigate the vulnerabilities caused by some harmful religious practices and all kinds of extremism that can be developed from terrorist actions,” he stressed.

According to the speaker of the Angolan Parliament, the pursuit of the national interests of each State has given rise to new threats, some located in specific territories and others relocated, taking a form of international terrorism and other related crimes.

He noted that, in view of this phenomenon, States had to contextualise their strategic concepts of national security and formulate new mechanisms through the establishment of regional communities, to cope with erratic and natural phenomena.

He recalled that Angola is a democratic State under the rule of law, “and it is certain that the guarantee of national security is an indispensable condition for the development of the materialisation of our people’s aspirations”.

In this regard, he noted that the sovereign bodies, especially the AN, are, under the terms of the Constitution, obliged to approve normative instruments or laws “that not only safeguard our vocation, as rule of law and democratic state, but also the rights, freedoms and guarantees of citizens”.
