Tunis: Participants at the international symposium on “The Role of Modern Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in the Development of Journalistic Content for News Agencies”, organised by TAP News Agency on Thursday, called for the risk-free use of artificial intelligence to develoop journalistic content.
Director General of the Union of News Agencies of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Mohammed Al-Yami, addressed the ethical and legal challenges of using AI in news agencies.
He underlined the importance of their involvement in this technological process, which is now a necessity to report facts and news quickly while ensuring transparency and credibility.
Cyber security expert Helmi Rais spoke about the cyber risks of AI, pointing out that its misuse could promote anonymity mechanisms and increase the risk of hacking.
On the other hand, Hichem Zammali, IT Director at TAP, presented the agency’s experience in using modern technologies and information systems.
He stressed the importance of inte
grating new technologies and AI in a safe and careful way to protect user data.
Zammali specified that TAP has initiated the use of new technologies and embraced the digital transition to enhance its journalistic output.
For his part, Zouheir Ourimi, Assistant Editorial Director of TAP, in a presentation titled “Ethics of the Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Service of the News Agency”, noted that despite significant advances in AI, it can sometimes be a potential source of misinformation.
This is due to stored data from various sources, individuals, books or websites, which could be false, erroneous or biased.
He pointed out that the news agency needs AI techniques to improve its output, streamline the efforts of journalists, speed up translation and detect fake images, without neglecting the ethical and professional aspects of the media’s mission.
Ourimi stressed that education and training institutions in the information sector and news agencies are urged to develop the use of AI ethically.
He
warned of its impact on media neutrality and the risk of misinformation, which could jeopardise the credibility of the news agency and the trust of readers.
He stressed the need for laws and codes to protect the rights of journalists amid the proliferation of AI software and applications, noting the lack of legislation and international agreements regulating the use of AI tools and protecting journalists from plagiarism.
He also emphasised the importance of defining the ways and objectives of AI use in order to preserve the noble mission of the news agency, as well as its credibility and objectivity.
For her part, Daria Ivankova, Director of the International Cooperation Department at TV BRICS, stressed in her online presentation that AI, which has permeated our daily lives, is increasingly being used in the production of audiovisual content, noting that generative AI presents both opportunities and risks that require serious evaluation.
In a separate session, Sami Ghazali, Director General of the Digital
Economy at the Ministry of Communication Technologies, presented the “Digital Tunisia 2025” strategy.
He explained that this strategy is based on revising the legal frameworks that regulate digitisation and digital social inclusion, and reducing the digital divide between regions and social categories.
“This strategy aims to promote the digital transition in the administration, secure cyberspace and develop skills in this field,” he said.
For his part, Mohamed Elloumi, Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, presented the ministry’s communication plan and said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is very active on the Internet and social media.
The Ministry has created the “Tunisia Media” platform to ensure communication with diplomatic missions abroad and to publicise its various activities.
“The platform provides spaces to better showcase the successes of Tunisians abroad and promote Tunisia as a tourist and business destination,” he added.
The internationa
l symposium on “The Role of Modern Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in the Development of Journalistic Content for News Agencies” was organised by TAP news agency, as part of its one-year term as president of the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN).
It was attended by 10 news agencies and several television channels from Mediterranean countries, as well as a large number of experts and representatives of AI start-ups.
