Port of Luanda Plans Significant Capacity Increase by 2027

Luanda:The Port of Luanda is aiming for a substantial increase in its cargo handling and ship reception capacity, targeting a 20% to 25% growth starting in 2027. This anticipated expansion is attributed to recent investments in terminal modernization and process digitization, as announced by a senior executive on Tuesday.

According to Angola Press News Agency, commercial administrator Silvano Araujo, speaking at the Angola Hub Transport and Logistics Summit in Talatona, stated that the port authority is focusing on leveraging infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements across its facilities.

In 2025, the Port of Luanda managed approximately 18 million metric tons of cargo and serviced about 5,060 vessels, as highlighted by Araujo. The expected growth comes after significant renovations at the Multipurpose Terminal, where logistics operator Noatum is expected to oversee operations. These modernization efforts have temporarily limited container storage capacity, impacting recent traffic volumes.

Araujo emphasized the port's objective to see returns on the investments already made, aiming to enhance operational capacity from next year. He noted that achieving total growth depends on sustained capital expenditure by concessionaires operating at various terminals within the port.

To support its digitization efforts, the port has implemented a vessel traffic management platform and is developing a digital system for monitoring terminal operations. Araujo explained that this technological initiative aims to transform Luanda into a "smart port," using data analytics to improve turnaround times and enhance overall efficiency.

Additionally, the port authority is advancing clean energy initiatives to provide shore power to docked vessels during cargo operations, in line with international maritime decarbonization standards.

The three-day logistics summit, concluding on Wednesday, gathers regional officials, investors, and transport operators to discuss trade connectivity and infrastructure development in West and Central Africa.
