President discusses social situation with civil society leaders

Luanda – Angolan head of State João Lourenço Monday discussed the country’s social, economic and political situation with several members of civil society.

In separate meetings, the Angolan Head of State heard opinions and ideas that, from a socio-economic point of view, can contribute to improving the living conditions of Angolans.

Speaking to the press, the social activist Rafael Marques said they analysed issues such as agrarian reform, the fight against hunger and poverty, state bureaucracy and the country’s current Constitution.

He said that one cannot talk about fighting hunger without reforms to increase agricultural production.

In this regard, he called for the need for more people in the countryside to produce with legal security, so as not to have difficulties in accessing land and small credits.

In turn, Guilherme Neves, from Associação Mãos Livres, an organisation whose social object is linked to social promotion and defence of human rights, presented concerns related to access to justice in the communities, the revision of the land law and the mining code.

With regard to access to justice, he defended the expansion of these services to all regions of the country, at a time when their decentralization is planned.

Also received by the Head of State, Friar Júlio Candeeiro, from Associação Mosaico, spoke about the problem of public policies, participatory budgeting and deforestation in the eastern region of the country, which, in his view, needs more supervision.

Associação Mosaico has been in existence for 25 years and its actions are aimed at the defence of human rights and social promotion.

Carlos Cambuta, director-general of Action for Rural Development and Environment (ADRA), expressed concerns about what he considered lack of more dialogue at national level with leaders of political parties and members of civil society.

Founded in 1990, ADRA, with actions focused on sustainable development in rural communities, carries out projects in the provinces of Benguela, Moçamedes, Malanje, Huambo and Huíla.
