President João Lourenço holds talks with DRC counterpart

Luanda – The heads of State of Angola and of the Democratic Republic Congo, João Lourenço and Félix Tshisekedi, met privately in the Angolan capital, Luanda, on Tuesday.

No statements were made to the press on the issues discussed between the two statesmen.

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who has already left Luanda, made a stopover of a few hours in the country.

The visit comes at a time of renewed political instability in the eastern DRC, with the resurgence of armed groups such as the M23.

Tshisekedi’s mission is believed to have been aimed at reporting on political developments in the DRC to the Angolan statesman, acting chairman of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), of which both countries are members. The ICGLR is an organisation set up with the aim of resolving issues of peace and security.

Angola and DRC are also member States of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), have been in contact on issues related to peace, stability and security in the region.

Both countries share a land border of about 2,500 kilometres.
