President João Lourenço in Addis Ababa for AU Summit

Addis Ababa – Angolan head of State João Lourenço arrived Thursday (16) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), set to begin on Saturday (18).

Accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, the Angolan Statesman was received at the Bole International Airport by the host country’s authorities.

An Angolan delegation, led by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, also welcomed the President João Lourenço at Bole Airport.

João Lourenço show up again in the most important Forum for Political Coordination in Africa, after his re-election for a second term, following the General Elections held on 24 August 2022 in Angola.

His first presence at the Headquarters of the African Union (AU), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as Angolan head of State, happened in 2018.

President João Lourenço was elected “AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation”, during the Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa, held on May 28, 2022, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, in recognition of his commitment to promote peace in the continent.

President João Lourenço is expected to submit his first report during the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

In the (virtual) address, delivered on January 31 (Day of Reconciliation and Peace Building in Africa), at the session of the AU Peace and Security Council, in Addis Ababa, João Lourenço pointed to the trust and unity in the diversity

of the peoples of Africa, as a way for the continent to achieve peace and reconciliation, as well as manage and resolve conflicts.

Also as Acting President of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), João Lourenço has promoted quadripartite summits (Angola, DRC, Rwanda and Uganda), focused on issues of security and regional cooperation.
