Dar Es Salaam:Forty-seven years after the first state visit by an Angolan President, João Lourenço has returned to Tanzania, a country with historical ties to Angola's liberation struggle. His visit aims to transform a legacy of solidarity into a new phase of economic cooperation and regional integration.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Lourenço was warmly welcomed by the Tanzanian people upon his arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport, highlighting the strong human dimension and historical ties of friendship between the two nations. This visit is not only diplomatic but also a symbolic reunion with a shared history of struggle against colonialism and apartheid, as Angola and Tanzania work towards closer economic ties and expanded investment opportunities.
During the visit, Lourenço paid tribute to the memory of Africa's liberation struggle at the African Liberation Heritage Centre by unveiling a photograph of António Agostinho Neto and Julius Nyerere. This act underscored the historical relationship between the two statesmen and emphasized the current need for African states to leverage intra-continental opportunities for economic development and greater autonomy.
A symbolic train journey from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma highlighted the importance of railways in integrating African countries. The potential connection between the Benguela Railway in Angola and the TAZARA railway line could foster new trade opportunities, reduce logistical constraints, and enhance regional transport options.
Economic cooperation featured prominently in discussions between João Lourenço and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Four agreements were signed, covering air services, ICT, meteorology, and the transfer of sentenced persons. The air services agreement aims to establish direct links between the two countries, potentially boosting business travel and tourism. Angola also expressed readiness to share the AngoSat-2 satellite's capabilities with Tanzania, with applications in agriculture and meteorology.
In the energy sector, Angola is interested in attracting Tanzanian investment in the Lobito Refinery, while agriculture, mining, education, and healthcare were identified as other areas for potential collaboration. The visit also included gestures to strengthen diplomatic relations, with Tanzania announcing plans to reopen its Embassy in Angola.
The visit concluded with Lourenço participating in the inauguration of the Mtumba Government City in Dodoma, symbolizing a commitment to move from agreements to actionable implementation in bilateral relations. The challenge remains in converting these diplomatic efforts into tangible benefits for both nations' citizens.
