Luanda:The Head of the Main Directorate for Patriotic Education of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), António Fernandes, has emphasized the significance of preserving the historical memory of military personnel who have died in service to the nation. This initiative aims to instill patriotic values in younger generations.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Lieutenant-General Fernandes expressed these views during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Luanda. The event was held in anticipation of All Souls' Day, observed on November 2.
Fernandes highlighted that the tribute honors history, national identity, and military culture. It also encourages young service members to understand and appreciate the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives for the Angolan people's values and interests. The initiative is part of the FAA's annual program to honor military personnel who died in service, particularly those who fell in battle.
The commemorative ceremonies extended across various military regions, with events organized by different FAA branches. In Luanda, beyond the General Staff, the National Air Force held a tribute at Benfica Cemetery, and the Angolan Navy paid homage at Alto das Cruzes Cemetery.
The ceremony was led by General José Marques, Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Patriotic Education, who noted in the book of remembrance that the FAA honors all combatants who heroically sacrificed for the nation's cause. The message emphasized the commemoration of All Souls' Day and the honor given to those who defended and secured peace, now a cornerstone of development.
Attendees included general officers, admirals, senior officers, captains, junior officers, sergeants, enlisted personnel, and civilian employees. The Monument to the Unknown Soldier, located at the end of 1º Congresso do MPLA Avenue overlooking Luanda Bay, serves as the nation's highest tribute to fallen soldiers, symbolized through its design elements representing sacrifice, unity, and the nation's rise.
