Luanda: Angolan President Joo Louren§o on Thursday expressed deep solidarity with the people and authorities of Nepal following the earthquake that struck the country on Wednesday, which has so far claimed 360 lives and left 1,300 people missing. In a message addressed to Nepalese President Ram Chandra Poudel, the Angolan Head of State lamented the difficult situation facing the country and conveyed condolences to the families of the victims.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Joo Louren§o's message expressed sorrow over the August 26 earthquake, noting the significant human and material losses incurred. He acknowledged the efforts of Nepalese authorities in providing relief and assistance to the victims and expressed confidence in their ability to bring comfort to those affected and their families.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the flooding was triggered by the collapse of a glacier, causing a magnitude 5.2 earthquake and landslides. The floods affected the Trishuli River valley in Nuwakot district, north of Kathmandu, and the Bhotekoshi River valley, east of the capital. The mountainous district of Rasuwa, home to several hydroelectric power projects, was among the worst-affected areas.
Nepalese authorities continue search and rescue operations and efforts to locate the missing, while specialised teams work to provide assistance to communities affected by the disaster.
