President leaves Ondjiva after three-day visit

Ondjiva – The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, ended this Tuesday his three-day working visit to Cunene province, marked by the inauguration of the Cafu water catchment system.

In the southern province, the Head of State visited some infrastructures linked to the Cafu water catchment channel, and delivered agricultural equipment to local communities.

The inauguration of the Cunene River Water Transfer System will benefit 235,000 people from the municipalities of Ombadja, Cuanhama and Namacunde.

The Cafu pumping station is the first of five projects under the programme of structural actions to combat the effects of drought in Cunene province.

The project is estimated at 44.3 billion kwanzas and will also make it possible to water 250,000 animals and irrigate 5,000 hectares of agricultural fields.

The construction contract for the canal was decided after a visit by the President of the Republic to the Cacimbas in Ombala Yo Mungo, Ombadja municipality, in May 2019, at the time affected by a severe drought.

In Cunene, the President of the Republic reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to implement structuring programmes to reduce the impact of drought in the provinces of Cunene, Namibe and Huila.

During his stay in Cunene, João Lourenço, as ruling MPLA party leader, opened the pre-election campaign, with a view to this year’s general elections.
