Quipungo Municipality Shook by 3.7 Magnitude Earthquake

Quipungo: The municipality of Quipungo, located in central Huila Province, experienced a 3.7-magnitude earthquake last Saturday, classified as mild by the Geophysics Division of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics of Angola (INAMET).

According to Angola Press News Agency, a note obtained in Lubango indicated that the tremor occurred at 5:45 p.m., with the epicenter approximately 15 miles east of Quipungo. There are currently no reports of material damage or human casualties, and the situation is being monitored by the relevant authorities.

INAMET clarifies that low-magnitude earthquakes can occasionally occur in Angola and, in most cases, do not pose a danger to the population. This is the first earthquake recorded in Huila province in 2026, though the region has experienced frequent seismic activity, particularly in Caconda, Caluquembe, and Lubango.

In November 2025, INAMET recorded two low-intensity earthquakes in the municipalities of Dongo and Caluquembe, with magnitudes of 3.3 and 3.6, respectively, on the Richter scale. No damage was observed.
