Research centre to help develop oil sector

Sumbe – The Sonangol Research Centre, under construction in Sumbe city, coastal Cuanza Sul Province, will contribute to the sustainable development of the country’s oil sector, the Minister for Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo said Friday.

The centre, which will be run by Portuguese construction company Poliobras, will be an advisory, consultative and permanent body to monitor, assess and decide on research and innovation activities, to assess existing conditions and available resources in order to ensure excellence in terms of scientific productivity and learning.

The referred industrial unit is being built in an area of 63 hectares, and will have administrative infrastructures, laboratories (digital and cyber), laundry, cafeteria, clinic, auditorium, social centre and housing.

Speaking to the press at the end of the assessment visit of the works, underway since 2016, Minister Diamantino Azevedo said that the centre will contribute to the projection of the sector, through research, technical assistance and specialized training in various areas (gas, mining, renewable energy, biofuels and minerals).

“We intend the institution to be a reference at a regional level and recognized internationally, within the scope of the needs of Sonangol’s business, of external clients and that it will lead the sector’s energy transition,” he said.
