Ruling MPLA party leader calls for greater commitment to peace

Cunene – The President of the ruling MPLA party João Lourenço Tuesday in Ondjiva, southern Cunene province, urged the politicians for a greater commitment to peace and the development of the country.

Addressing an opening ceremony of his party’s pre-election campaign, João Lourenço highlighted the commitment to peace of the politicians that have joined the people to celebrate this great achievement.

Angola celebrated Monday its 20th anniversary of peace and national reconciliation, achieved on 4 April 2002, between the Angolan Government and UNITA.

In his speech, the MPLA President said that during 20 years of peace, the country “did a lot of good things for the people”, having rebuilt the main infrastructure destroyed during the war.

The President of the Republic also stated, on the occasion, that the country did not restrict itself to rebuilding what was destroyed.

“The successive Executives that ruled the country over these 20 years have also built important infrastructures in almost all areas, to make life easier for citizens (…)”, he stressed.

João Lourenço added that the work to recover the destroyed infrastructure and the construction of others was only possible because the country knew how to keep the peace, with people acting like watchmen.

The people, he added, did not allow “any adventurer to spoil and destroy this great asset, called peace”.

Angola is preparing to hold general elections in August 2022.

Previous elections took place in 2017, with ruling MPLA party obtained 61.7 percent of the votes.

This victory enabled the party to get 150 seats in the National Assembly and electing its leader, João Lourenço, as President of the Republic.
